Owner + Program Director of New York Pilates
How would you describe your athletic / movement / fitness practice(s)?
My background is as a professional dancer. I have been teaching Pilates and movement since 2005 (omg). I am also a serious yoga practitioner.
When people ask you what you do for a living, what do you say?
I say “I own a pilates studio called ‘New York Pilates’. It’s really fun & cool.” :)
What are the top three most important investments you’ve made in yourself?
Definitely my Pilates certification! Also investing in opening the studio, with blood, sweat, tears and all of my money.
What prompted you to pursue a path (career or passion) tied to athleticism / fitness / movement?
I have always loved movement and have danced for many years. The passion I have for helping people understand their bodies and experience the freedom of movement is what drives me. Moving safely and efficiently is a beautiful artform in and of itself.
From where do you draw your sense of inner strength?
I try to make the act of living an everyday art project. As a dancer the artistry comes from the tiny decisions that you make within the confines of the choreography. I feel the same about simple actions like how you get dressed, the stride you use on your walk to work. The way you decide to interact with your barista, coworker or employee. When you make these tiny decisions with intention you can turn an ordinary day into a spectacular performance of creativity and joy.
What do you love to do when no one is around?
When I am alone and have found myself with a few spare hours I love to take long walk around downtown, window shopping and people watching, or have a secret brunch by myself and read a good book.
Favorite daily ritual?
Always coffee!
Favorite space to be by yourself?
I love taking a bath. I have a great bathtub and its the perfect time to think and reflect on the day
Favorite motivational saying / quote / advice?
Live life like art OR Always get dressed. I live by both mottos.
