Let’s face it: there’s nothing more disappointing than finally finding a bra that you love, only for it to start falling apart after a couple of wears. And the truth is, many intimates companies don’t build their intimates to last. So, how do you spot a fabric that will actually stand the test of time? And what makes these fabrics different from something you might find on a fast fashion website? We asked our technical designer, Helen Tozer, to weigh in.
According to Tozer, the difference between cheap fabrics and high quality fabrics in intimates is stark. She explains that cheap fabrics “don’t keep their shape,” causing them to “lose support and break down in wash and wear.” Technically speaking, she notes that cheaply-made fabrics are created on lower denier and lower gauge machines, which makes for “less refined fabrics that snag, pull, feel itchy, and don’t conform to the body,” leading to discomfort and lack of support.
So, what really makes high quality fabrics different? Tozer explains that, when an intimates company uses fine yarn on high gauge machines, (“gauge” referring to the number of stitches per inch in a knitted fabric), it leads to "superior fabrics with better support.” This means that you not only get to enjoy a long-lasting product, but a comfortable and supportive one, too. Fabrics made on low gauge machines, on the other hand, are more susceptible to ripping and becoming shapeless, as they have less stitches in place to keep them structured and firm.
If you’re wondering why more intimates companies don’t utilize higher-gauge machines, (who doesn’t want a higher-quality product?), the answer might have something to do with the fact that using less refined machines helps achieve better profit margins. Higher-gauge machines are also more difficult to use, and many manufacturers simply lack the expertise required to use them correctly. Unfortunately, this shortcut often leads to products that deteriorate after a frustratingly short period of time.
It’s all well and good for us to tell you that you should be investing in higher-quality intimates – but this information is useless if you don’t actually know how to spot superior fabrics in different bra styles. And, no, just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it is of high quality or construction. I asked Tozer to name the top five bra materials that actually stand the test of time, and here’s what she said:
While not all mesh is created equal, when you choose a bra that is made from high quality power mesh, you’ll be able to enjoy a supportive and soft wear. Negative’s Sieve Nylon, for example, is produced on a high gauge machine and provides extra support due to its unique construction. This material is ideal for those who are seeking long-lasting bra support without having to deal with a pesky and uncomfortable underwire. When done right, nylon can provide you with long-lasting comfort and support. Negative’s nylon/spandex blend, named Glacé due to its polished and silky appearance, is made on a high gauge machine. It provides a refined, smooth, and snag-free finish and is equal parts chic and supportive, and also achieves a smooth look under clothes without the padding or heft of a classic t-shirt bra. This material is a great choice for customers looking to add something unique to their supportive and long-lasting bra.

When looking for high-quality fabrics, cotton bras are often a safe bet – but don’t just go with any cotton. 100% cotton might sound appealing, but it has a tendency of lying flat and stretching out of time. Negative’s fine cotton adds spandex to help with durability and complement and fit your curves instead of simply sitting on top of your body. As a bonus, it’s also made with longer cotton fibers for a softer and more lightweight feel.

Traditional lace can itch, snag, and lose its shape easily – but not Negative’s lace. Our Serpente lace is created using a “twisted construction” method, creating a pattern that prevents the lace from breaking apart. Plus, it’s unique and under-the-radar stylish.
A modal and spandex blend is ideal for those looking to wrap themselves in a super soft fabric. Our Whipped modal is different from other modals because it features a drop-needle stitch for the ultimate butter-soft feel, as well as spandex for extra fit, form, and function. This soft loungewear fabric is truly worth the hype.
When it comes to the fabric that sits closest to your body, it’s important to never compromise. Not only does investing in a long-lasting fabric help save you money in the long run because you won’t have to refresh your wardrobe as often, but it also protects your skin and prevents you from being uncomfortable.
